DABS1 & KAWS

Cover: DABS1 and KAWS

Exploring the streets of Taipei we stumbled upon DABS1 graffiti on the walls of the Ximen (or Ximending) district of the Taipei metropolis – While looking on google earth street view after the fact I found images of the artist in the process. Coincidence? Easter egg? Interestingly the image appears on ‘google maps‘ but no longer on the web version or desktop version of ‘google earth‘ where I had taken these screen-shots a week ago. The street view images although different now are labeled the same year 2011 – Here’s an article from Vice with more on the Taiwan graffiti scene.

google earth screen shots as of a week ago although dated 2011 as other found screen shots

Brooklyn based artist KAWS had a installation at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei over the last week of January 2019. From the pages of Juxatopoz to happen upon traveling the same week it was up. The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall itself is a site to see just for its use of scale. Press: Highsnobity

Skateboard cutting boards

Cutting Blocks made out of old skateboards

Started with cleaning out the garage and a pile of 40 or so old skateboards from my roommate who was a coach for awhile and would hold onto all the kids old skate decks. There is a bunch of info online about how to work with old skate decks if interested in creating something to this order. These sculptures are very impressive by Haroshi.

  1. The basic approach is to first remove the grip tape, using a combo of hair dryer to heat the grip tape up and a razor blade to help peel is the general concept. Try and remove grip-tape as one large sheet, depending on age/abuse some are easier then others…
  2. Using a circular saw cut off the nose/tail of the boards past the truck bolt holes. Rip remaining center into strips, I ripped mine at 1.25 inches accounting for sanding.
  3. Roughen both top and bottom of board with sandpaper and then apply glue and clamp. Because of the convex shape of the boards I did a dry run previously trying to align interesting colors and match concaves to reduce gaps during gluing/clamping.
  4. Leave clamped for 24/48 hrs – clean up glued surface using a belt-sander.
  5. With the circular saw again cut off the edges of the glued boards to reveal the layered wood colors and finish sand.

By no means was I in a rush during this project but with 40 decks as raw material and only 5 steps to explain the process it definitely took some time.

Here are 2 videos of another project that took a little time!

Custom DJ Vinyl

Custom DJ Vinyl controllers by Digilog Designs

For the last 2 years I have been helping Walter of Digilog Designs laying-out and printing custom vinyl controllers for musicians and have finally launched a soft website – in anticipation of offering a range of services from vinyl applications we currently offer as well as other promotional material like, color die-cut stickers, apparel printing and embroidery. In December we will be traveling to Chile for the Redbull Thre3style World Championship to showcase some of our work and watch the best dj’s battle for the crown.

Similar to the general principle of a zoetrope in that each frame/step is incremented at same rate to create the illusion of animation. With the help of Css Animation & Donovan Hutchinson via Codepen

Animation, death of FLASH

Dopefruit cover

The message you get when uploading .swf files – (usually they just say that file type is not permitted but in this case they allow you to select it to only show you a message!)

R.I.P. FLASH… Like all good ideas not all of them make it, after 2 or so years the www.dopefruit.com e-commerce site shipped it’s last order at the end quarter of 2012. I was going thru some work files and this is one of my favorite logo’s that I have designed to date as well as a pretty cool ‘FLASH’ animation for the site.
